Weekend Confetti Vol. 3

Jan 23, 2021

Welcome to Weekend Confetti!

Here you will find your weekly dose of interesting and merry miscellany that you didn’t know you needed to know.   Enjoy!

January 23rd is National Pie Day! Who doesn’t like pie? (If you don’t, don’t tell me.) I have never learned how to actually make a pie from scratch, but I signed up to hear about the next opportunity to do this! (There is even a book. Who knew this was a thing!?)

If you have ever used the phrase ‘American as apple pie’, you might be interested to know that pie was once a controversial topic. (Seriously?) And it’s origins were much humbler than the fancy yumminess that we enjoy today. Here is the long and short of it.

Finally, did you know pie could also be art? People are so freaking clever.

I’m not sure how I could top PIE, but this week was also a big week to celebrate women, as Kamala Harris was sworn in as the first female vice-president.

I hope that we can all agree that this was a HUGE day for women, politics aside. Women running for office have a lot of obstacles to overcome.  And every woman has a role to play to help women be well represented in government. (Take this quiz to find out yours!)

This ‘first’ is one more accomplishment added to the long line of female firsts.  Some of those firsts are well known: Amelia Earhart, Sandra Day O’Connor, Sally Ride.

Here are a few impressive firsts you may not have heard of:

 Janet Guthrie

Penny Harrington

Wilma Rudolph

If you are shopping for an amazing woman in your life, this would be a great gift.  Or this.

Here is one of my favorite places to find sassy gifts for my sassy peeps. And if you are looking for some ways to inspire your littlest women, here is the perfect spot.

If reading about amazing women helps to motivate you, try this book. (I own it…it’s amazing.)

And here is the one I just ordered.

Speaking of amazing women, have you ever given any thought to who your heros are? What women -past or present- inspire you?

Several years ago I decided that this would be an interesting and important exercise for me.

I continue to be inspired by this woman, who achieved much more than is commonly known. Including writing her own autobiography. (Highly recommend!)

If you are looking for something interesting to watch this weekend, this documentary is what is on my list. And this movie, based on a true story about another female first.

And last but not least, this is a reminder that YOU, just like all these others,  are also an amazing, phenomenal woman.

We women are in good company.

Happy Weekend!!
